Prior to engaging volunteer support for Uttoxeter station, the station’s gardens, which are within the car park, were in an unkempt state. Now 2 years on from enrolling our first volunteer, we now have a dedicated team at Uttoxeter, who have given the area a real makeover. The colourful beds and tidy shrubs are now being judged as part of the annual In Bloom competition and the real community support now given to the station has helped Uttoxeter win the Gold award.

Not only have the Uttoxeter volunteer team transformed the existing station gardens, they also made the creation of a whole new garden possible to improve the station gateway. Uttoxeter Station Heritage Garden was a partnership project with Network Rail, East Midlands Trains, community rail and the volunteers to transform part of a former station platform. Opened by Chair of ORR Anna Walker in 2014, the garden is now fully established with a wide variety of shrubs, perennials and trees to sustain wildlife, and incorporates bench seating, providing passengers with a lovely waiting area.
