Bee-friendly project for Alsager Station

1st May 2013

Bees are the focus of a unique, new project at Alsager station on the Crewe-Stoke-Derby line, to help sustain this very important form of wildlife.

The ‘Bee-friendly’ project by the North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership (NSCRP) involves introducing more bee-friendly pollinating plants into the extensive station gardens at Alsager and also fitting bee boxes to provide a better habitat for bees.

The new plants, including honeysuckle and lavender, have been chosen by the station’s volunteers, and will be planted in by the volunteer team at a special station Community Day on Wednesday 1 May. The bee boxes, together with a number of bird nesting boxes, all of which have been donated by East Midlands Trains, will also be fitted on the day.

Thanks to support from Alsager School, the NSCRP has also been able to expand the project to develop unique poster information for Alsager passengers, created by East Midlands Trains timetable production team, which will be displayed in the waiting shelters.

Five Year 7 students, all aged 12 years, have designed eye-catching bee logos to illustrate a series of four posters entitled ‘Make A Bee-Line for Alsager’ (information on rail travel options from Alsager); ‘Bee A Friend to Alsager’ (how to join the station volunteer team); ‘Bee Kind to Alsager’ (plea to passengers to help keep the station litter-free); and ‘Bee Part of Alsager’ (an invitation to join the station’s many sponsors).

Faye Lambert, NSCRP Project Officer, said: “Our aim is to make Alsager station even more of a haven for bees and wildlife and also encourage everyone to be kind to bees. Projects such as this are a great way of adding extra value to the brilliant work done by our station volunteers and involving the local community in supporting their station and making it a better place for rail travel.”

Jonny Wiseman, Route Manager for East Midlands Trains added: "This is a great project which we are happy to be supporting. We are lucky to have some fantastic support at Alsager from the Community Rail Partnership and the volunteers and are pleased to playing our part in enhancing the station even further."

East Midlands Trains’ staff will be helping the NSCRP and station volunteers with the Bee-friendly activities on the day.

Alsager station has won five awards in the past 12 months in recognition of the work of station volunteers and community support for partnership projects.
