Cheshire Award for Alsager station

15th January 2014

North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership (NSCRP) and Alsager station volunteers are celebrating again after taking yet another award, this time at the 2013 Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards.

For the third year running, the station has been recognised at these awards for the great support it receives from the community, this time receiving the Youth Challenge award.

The Youth Challenge award marks the creative contribution made to Alsager station’s ‘Bee Friendly’ project by Alsager School students. Through the project, station volunteers used their gardening knowledge and skills to the utmost effect, introducing more pollinating plants, herbs, fruits and bee boxes into the station gardens. Five Alsager School students added value to ‘Bee Friendly’ by  designing a series of Bee-themed posters with East Midlands Trains to promote use of the station and encourage volunteering, as well as asking passengers to ‘Bee friendly to Bees’.

Faye Lambert, NSCRP Project Officer said: “It’s projects such as this, which also won the 2013 national community rail award for Best Small Project, that illustrate the real community support enjoyed by Alsager station and the dedication of its volunteers.

“Alsager School students have always given fantastic support to Alsager station through a number of projects, illustrating how the Alsager community has come together to make Alsager a station to be proud of.”

Many members of the volunteer team at Alsager station have now been volunteers for 7 years, helping to create a welcoming station that gets great feedback from passengers. The station is featured in a new publication, ‘Cheshire Celebrates’, jointly sponsored by East Midlands Trains, which celebrates the community spirit that has put new life into many Cheshire stations.
