Community support for Longton Station

13th October 2012

A variety of organisations are coming together on Saturday 13 October 2012 to help North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership (NSCRP), East Midlands Trains and station volunteers improve Longton station.

The helpers on the day include a 15-strong group of the 8th Longton Brownies, Rainbows and Guides of St Mary and Chad, who will be carrying out a litter pick all around the station.

The young people will also be helping Longton station volunteers, East Midlands Trains’ staff and ‘Monty the Monster’ of Fenton Fun Factory with a variety of gardening activities; these include planting in a number of new shrubs (all donated by the Fun Factory) and spring bulbs, donated by Tesco’s Longton store.

To further improve the station platform area, wildflower seeds will be sown on the platform ends, using mixed seed donated by Bagnall-based nursery Jacksons.

The volunteers will also be helped along by having the right tools: Longton’s BEST DIY store has donated a number of new gardening tools to the station volunteers to support the community event and to help them in their work improving the station.

Faye Lambert, Project Officer for the Partnership, said: “We’re delighted to have such great community support for Longton station from the children and all these local businesses. It really boosts the hard work being put in by our station volunteers to tidy the green areas of Longton station and improve the general station environment for passengers.”

Jonny Wiseman, Route Manager for East Midlands Trains, added: “This is a great example of the local community pulling together to improve their local station. We’re very grateful to the additional volunteers for their support and hope they enjoy their day at the station.”
