Longton station mural takes shape

11th February 2014

Sponsors, station volunteers and the North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership will be joining local artist Anthony Hammond at Longton station on Tuesday 11 February 2014 to approve the first completed panel of the station’s new platform mural.

The mural project was developed by North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership, which works to promote and develop the local Crewe, Stoke-on-Trent to Derby service, in celebration of Network Rail’s improvement project to the historic Longton rail bridge.

Longton bridge project team Amco and East Midlands Trains have jointly sponsored this project, supporting the community rail partnership’s on-going work with the community and station volunteers to improve the station.

Designed by artist Anthony Hammond and Longton station volunteers, the colourful and intricate mural design, due to be completed in March, will be a stand-out feature on Platform 1. Consisting of three individual panels, it will serve to celebrate the history of the town and the rail bridge. The now complete centre panel features the bridge itself, flagged by the lion crest of the North Staffordshire Railway, with a ‘Welcome’ message for passengers.

Faye Lambert, Community Rail Officer for the partnership, said: “Sincere thanks to Amco and East Midlands Trains for their sponsorship and support to help make this project happen. Longton rail bridge is a key feature of the town and the station so the mural is a fitting tribute and it will really brighten up the station for passengers.”

Ian Watson, Amco’s Contracts Manager for the Longton bridge project commented: “Engagement with the local community and the support of community projects are key business objectives for Amco and we are proud to be able to assist the North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership with these improvements.”
East Midlands Trains manages Longton station and operates the hourly Crewe-Stoke-Derby service. Rob Burton, Station Manager for East Midlands Trains said: "We would like to thank joint sponsors Amco, the partnership and all of the station volunteers for this fantastic mural. It really will brighten up the platform and will ensure that passengers have a great new welcome to the station."
