Tribute to Alsager station volunteer

2nd April 2014

A lasting tribute to long-serving Alsager station volunteer, Mark Hampton, who died last year, is being unveiled at Alsager station today.

The tribute is a memorial plaque, funded by North Staffordshire Community Rail Partnership (NSCRP) and East Midlands Trains, which has been installed on Platform 2.

The Alsager Station Friends volunteers have been tending the station gardens since 2007, providing a very welcoming environment for passengers.

Mark was one of the original members, and showed his devotion to the group by asking that donations in his memory be made to the Friends.

£234.00 was donated at his funeral in November, which will fund more plants and equipment for the volunteers to sustain their work improving the extensive station gardens.

Faye Lambert, Project Manager for the NSCRP said: “Mark was one of our longest serving volunteers on the Crewe-Derby route. Alsager station was very precious to him and he always joined in with great enthusiasm all the volunteer and community activities. He will be sadly missed by us all.”

Fellow volunteer Peter Smith added: “We’ve lost a real kind friend, not only to the group but to anyone enquiring or journeying from the station. Mark had a lifelong interest in all aspects of rail, both locally and far further afield.”

Rob Burton, Station Manager at East Midlands Trains, said: “Mark was a great example of a dedicated station volunteer. We hope the memorial will serve to recognise the true community spirit he showed for Alsager station.”

Station volunteers and representatives from NSCRP and East Midlands Trains will be joining Mark’s widow Janet to unveil the plaque.
